Mendenhall Campground and Lake Trail Information

Campground Information

The trail follows the roads through the campground with a few very low grade hills.  It’s 0.25k to the loop and if you ski all of the main loops it’s another 2.88km.  The trail is suitable for all abilities of both skate and classic skiers.  The skate lane is wide, good for passing, and as a result the campground can accommodate many skiers.  The mostly wind-sheltered trail is durable and well-drained and is usually open for skiing all season Dec.-Apr.  Views can include ponds and the Mendenhall lake and glacier.  Skiers with dogs should keep them under control and clean up after them.  There is a permanent outhouse next to the Skaters Cabin and the USFS usually opens the restrooms across from the backpackers loop.  Parking is in front of Skaters Cabin, Skaters Cabin Road, Juneau, AK 99801.

Mendenhall Lake Information

When snow and lake ice conditions permit.  Ski at your own risk!  The trail leaves from the Skaters Cabin.  The ski loop distance varies but is usually ~5-6 km.  The trail is suitable for all abilities of both skate and classic skiers and can be opened or closed for weeks at a time depending on conditions.  Lake skiing can offer outstanding views of the surrounding mountains and Mendenhall Glacier but can be windy and foggy.  Skiers with dogs should keep them under control and clean up after them.  There is an outhouse next to the Skaters Cabin.  Parking is in front of Skaters Cabin, Skaters Cabin Road, Juneau, AK 99801.
