Like Mom said the lake ice cannot be called safe, but that’s what makes it fun! If your tolerance of risk includes open water at the glacier face, and potential thin spots or overflow conditions, you might enjoy some of the best wild ice in a generation.
Attendance was low, but skiers got the goods. Sedge worked the surface into a fine fast powder. Start Green was the wax. Surprise visit from Guy Thibodeau. Fencing at the entry was moved to prevent unauthorized fun. Thanks for the chocolate balls!
Great ice skating conditions on Mendenhall Lake, Auke Lake and Twin Lakes today (2/3/19).
The hardpack at Eagle Beach was groomed extensively Friday night and Saturday by ranger Brad and volunteers. The Juneau Nordic Ski Team held practice there are reports decent skiing. The classic track is somewhat icy, but the skate lanes were smoothed and grooved. Sunny and gorgeous out there.
6 degrees F. Glide Wax=Start Green. Get it while it is fresh. Sedge will be back later in the day for a few more passes with the couteau.
Montana creek has been scraped and combed—firm, fast corduroy.
Not groomed as of 1:30. Skate was fairly good, mostly hard pack and a little slick until after the Montana Cr. bridge. Classic track looked good.
