I just returned from a ski on the Lower and Upper Loops. They are groomed for skating! The Lower Loop is not completely groomed, but they have done a great job with what they have to work with. It is firm with a bit of early-season wash-board. Pretty good skiing! About 2km of the Upper Loop is groomed, the first .50 km loop with an additional inside trail, and then a down-and-back from below Black Bear chair base to the lower end of the Hilda Loop. It is smooth, firm, wide and good skiing. It looks really promising for the coming days. Get up there!
Skate track rolled Classic still good
Hi all! I’m looking for a pair of skate skis for my partner, Kevin, who is 6′ 1″ tall and has never skate skied before. They can be old skis, as long as they’re not bricks and still have their bases attached! His shoe size is 10.5 mens, just in case someone also has boots to go along with anything.
Surprising trace snow at start of Montana and about 3/4″ depth towards end. Wet snow falling as I groomed from 8:30 – 9:30. Surface is graded flat corduroy but soft. Snow cover down to bridge is thin but covers and increasingly good the further back up the valley you ski. Well worth as outing .
Despite the rain last night in Auke Bay I am headed out to try the grooming – maybe it was all snow at Montana Ck.? Will post after returning.
Eaglecrest set a little .50 km loop on the upper loop (the lower portion just below Black Bear base). Its skate-only, no classic track. The road is in good shape and you can skate all the way up from the lodge. You can add a little distance by doing laps on the flatter section of the road just below the Black Bear base. They also packed out a track on the hardened portion of the lower loop. I didn’t ski there – I think it is thin but just enough for skating (no classic track yet).
Ranger Brad rolled the campground around noon. No track set yet, but snow is okay for classic on main road. Major bare spot in woods on back loop, but a short loop around the hill has adequate coverage. . Too thin for the Ginzu, so skating would be rough.
